Gin Lovers Need to Try This New Japanese Gin

Sui is Japanese for kingfisher. It’s also the name of a gin brand from the Land of the Rising Sun that is now available in the Philippines. Made with flavors and botanicals that are distinctly Japanese—yuzu, green tea, and ginger—Sui Gin is a must-try for lovers of the potent clear spirit. 

At the launch held Thursday (June 23) in Makati, an expert mixologist from Suntory, which owns the Sui Gin brand, collaborated with the chefs of Izakaya on a selection of cocktail mixes and food pairing. The Sui Gin-based cocktails and dishes were designed to highlight each of the three delicate botanical flavors.

While yuzu is commonly used to accentuate flavors in Japanese dishes and lends a refreshing citrus aroma, green tea offers gentle umami notes for a rich body that harmonizes with meals. Meanwhile, ginger offers a mild spicy flavor with a clean aftertaste, for an invigorating finish.

Sui Gin’s botanicals are combined with traditional gin botanicals of juniper berry, coriander seed, angelica root, cardamom, cinnamon, bitter orange peel, and lemon peel.

The first cocktail was a simple SUI Gin & Soda, or a simple mix of the spirit with soda water so drinkers can fully appreciate the gin’s delicate flavors. The second was a spin on the classic gin and tonic called the Sui Sonic. Finally, you can Mix It Up with a squeeze of lemon, a tablespoon of Yuzu juice, raw grated ginger, or green tea. The mixologist also recommends adding things like crushed plum, wasabi, shiso leaves, or frozen oranges for more complex flavors.

The Sui Gin bottle has the Kanji symbol for Jade, which is a nod to the tall hexagonal shape that reflects clear and beautiful blue-green accents.

Sui Gin is now available in S&R stores nationwide and coming soon at your nearest supermarkets and liquor stores, as well as GrabMart, Lazada, Boozy, and Boozeshop. A 700ml bottle is P1,599 on Boozy.
