The Life of Roberto Bellini

Bellini's journey to the Philippines was as remarkable as his contributions to the culinary scene. Born in Pisa on January 3, 1940, into a family of restaurateurs and hoteliers, Bellini was destined for a life intertwined with food and hospitality. His early years saw him serving as a paratrooper in the military, after which he transitioned into the world of photojournalism—a career move that eventually brought him to the Philippines. It was here that he met his second wife, Maria Luisa, and together, they embarked on a new chapter of their lives and opened Bellini's in 1999.

The restaurant became a family affair, raising three children and creating a haven for authentic Italian cuisine in the heart of Quezon City. The establishment became a beloved fixture, not only for its food but also for the genuine connections Bellini fostered with his patrons.

Whether you were a Meiday regular back in the 2010s or whatever draws people to Cubao Expo these days, it's hard to imagine that you do not know of the Italian restaurant that stands out in the corner. Plus, it was the setting of an iconic scene of the very popular Filipino rom-com One More Chance, starring John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo.

The influence of Bellini extended beyond the culinary world, touching the lives of notable personalities. In January, Cruz publicly acknowledged Bellini's role in bolstering his confidence during challenging times, crediting the restaurateur's wisdom and encouragement. Bellini's words, "You have to work, John Lloyd," became a mantra that inspired Cruz to persevere in his craft.

Wake dates are from November 26 to 28, while the funeral is on November 29 at 2 p.m. at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina.
