13 Years Later, the Remastered Version of Avatar Is Back in Philippine Cinemas
After a decade-long wait, Avatar is back in cinemas, but not the one you might think. The remastered version of the 2009 film has returned to Philippine cinemas this September in anticipation of its highly anticipated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water in December.
It might be 13 years since David Cameron released his magnum opus to the world, but perhaps the best thing about the Oscar-winning film Avatar is that it’s timeless. In an age where cinema seems to just jump on hype and trends, Cameron has made sure to create a soon-to-be franchise worth rewatching a decade later. We say “soon-to-be” because, despite the fact that Avatar grossed almost $3 billion worldwide, the series is still technically only one film.
But what a film it was. Avatar is certified fresh with an 82 percent critic and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. After all these years, rewatching the film again in 3D after 13 years will no doubt feel like it’s the first time. Avatar will only have a limited run in cinemas, so might as well watch it as soon as possible to prepare for its sequel’s release at the end of the year.
Here’s a quick recap: Set in 2154, Avatar follows ex-Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) on the planet Pandora, where he becomes torn between two worlds and realities—between his human mind in an alien body. He encounters the Na’vi, falls in love with one of their kind, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), and begins to oppose the human destruction of their planet. Think of it as a tale of alien colonization, only the natives are 10 feet tall, blue, and can, well, fly.
Now imagine all of that… in 3D, 4D, and IMAX this time around.
