“Avengers: Endgame” Shatters Local Opening Day Box Office Records
When it comes to box office hits, Marvel Studios has gotten producing numbers down to a science: out of the top 10 highest grossing movies in a single day at the box office, it owned 7 spots. Avengers: Endgame is about to turn that statistic into 8.
The very highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame is the culmination of 11 years of storylines from different films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tickets were sold out days before the film’s premiere, even with cinemas screening Endgame for 24 hours. For weeks prior to opening day, local malls already started selling tickets for the film. In the U.S., ticket presales equaled those of Captain Marvel, Avengers: Infinity War, Aquaman, and The Last Jedi combined.
According to Marvel Studios, Avengers: Endgame shattered ticket sales records on opening day in the Philippines, collecting a total of P205,676,345 ($3,880,685) on 970 screens in the Philippines, with select cinemas starting at 6:01 AM and holding 24-hour screenings.
Analysts: “Endgame” Could Breach the $300 million First Weekend Sales in the US
The very first film to ever breach the $200 million mark on opening weekend was the first Avengers film (2012), according to Box Office Mojo. Since then, five other films have made the same feat. Avengers: Endgame is expected to join that small circle of movies with a 200-million-dollar opening weekend distinction, with many estimating its weekend sales to top $265 to $280 million.
But industry analysts are cautious about predicting a $300 million gross for Endgame. Although the film has shown very strong sales on opening day, industry analysts are doubtful whether the film can breach the much-coveted $300 million mark on the first weekend because of the film’s very long runtime of 3 hours.
According to Variety, in a span of 12 hours, cinemas can only screen Endgame three times, and that affects sales, even with numerous cinemas holding 24-hour screenings. But since Endgame has buried all records of advanced ticket sales, it is difficult to predict the weekend outcome for something that is unprecedented in popularity.
“Endgame” Reviewers: 97% Positive
On the reputedly accurate review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, Endgame achieved a “Certified Fresh” rating of 97 percent positive reviews. The reviews come from two major sources – film critics, who usually give relatively poorer reviews of films, and regular audiences.
Films that earn a steady score of at least 75 percent positive reviews from film critics and audiences gain a Certified Fresh status – a distinction awarded only to the best-reviewed films and shows.
Films that receive 60 to 74 percent positive reviews are labeled “Fresh,” while films that receive less than 60 percent are given a “Rotten” status.
