Bono: Stories of Surrender Is the Music Documentary We Need
While the rest of the world was in lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic, Bono embarked on a creative tear. The U2 frontman spent time at The Edge’s home reworking and re-recording a catalogue of the band’s biggest hits for an album titled Songs of Surrender, which was released in March 2023. The 40-track LP was accompanied by a documentary on Disney+ titled Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, as well as Bono’s memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.
Now, the musician continues his journey in Bono: Stories of Surrender. The Apple documentary, directed in black and white by Andrew Dominik (Blonde), will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival later this month. If you can believe it, Bono isn’t stopping there. The documentary will also capture Bono following his one-man show, Stories of Surrender: An Evening of Words, Music and Some Mischief. Truly, where does he find the time?

In the first trailer for the film, Bono discusses growing up in Dublin, his relationship with his parents, and even how he met his wife the same week he joined U2. “Turns out, the most extraordinary thing about my life is the people I’m in relationships with,” he says.
Apple's official press release states: "[Bono] pulls back the curtain on a remarkable life and the family, friends, and faith that have challenged and sustained him, revealing personal stories about his journey as a son, father, husband, activist, and rockstar. Along with never-before-seen, exclusive footage from the Beacon Theatre shows, the film features Bono performing many of the iconic U2 songs that have shaped his life and legacy."
After its premiere at Cannes, Bono: Stories of Surrender will stream for Apple TV+ subscribers on May 30. A special immersive edition will also debut on Apple Vision Pro; it will reportedly “place viewers onstage with Bono and in the center of his story.” If you’re lacking any U2 content in your life, get ready for an absolute tidal wave.
