Henry Cavill Will Not Return As Superman

It’s the end of the road for Henry Cavill’s Superman. Just a few months ago, Cavill euphorically announced his return as the man of steel, only for DC Studios to turn around and change their minds.

In an Instagram post, Cavill posted his farewell as the ultimate superhero. The actor expressed his sadness over the decision, as well as his appreciation for the fans who’ve supported his run as Superman.

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” said Henry Cavill. “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

DC Studios, which was relaunched in 2022 as part of the DCEU’s overhaul, is currently led by The Suicide Squad director James Gunn and DC alum Peter Safran. In a Twitter thread, James Gunn revealed that while the two have finally completed their DCEU master plan, Henry Cavill will not be a part of it. At least, not as Superman. The superhero is still an important part of DC Studios’ 10-year plan, but not in the incarnation we know now. Instead, Gunn and Safran will be exploring a young Superman story. 

“Peter and I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over the moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year,” tweeted Gunn.

“Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”

The young Superman film will not be an origin story, Gunn explained. And while Henry Cavill won’t return as Superman, Gunn did hint about future projects with Cavill. However, we’re not sure whether that’s the truth or just a way to appease angry fans.

“For those who have been by my side through the years, we can mourn for a bit but then we must remember Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists and the examples he set for us are still there!” wrote Henry Cavill. “My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

Henry Cavill is out as Superman, and Wonder Woman 3 won’t push through. It looks like DC is entering a new era, but without the actors who breathed life into its most beloved heroes.
