James Gunn Explains Why He Went With Will Poulter Instead of Tom Cruise for Adam Warlock
Phase five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) looks to be its most fun yet. Director James Gunn seems to be optimistic about the future of the MCU, too. As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 debuts this year, he was quick to point out his excitement about the last leg of the trilogy.
Recently, photos of Will Poulter's Adam Warlock resurfaced online, and we can't help but feel like the franchise is getting the ultimate superhero in the multiverse saga. Of course, the idea of Poulter as Adam Warlock definitely took some getting used to, considering that fans were practically willing Tom Cruise to star in the role. Gunn, however, made it clear why he went with the former instead.

Speaking to Empire, the director explained: “People online were saying, ‘Oh, Tom Cruise should be Adam Warlock… I wanted somebody who was youthful, and I wanted the person who had the dramatic chops and the comedic chops, not only for this movie but for what Marvel will use Adam Warlock for in the future… He could become this really important character.”
Observers have long speculated the significance of Adam Warlock's arrival in the MCU, especially because of his involvement in the Infinity Saga comics. We first saw a glimpse of him in the Galaxy Vol. 2 post-credits scene. At first, he had been expected to arrive during Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame. But they just really had to make us wait a little bit more.
Gunn, on the other hand, has been keeping fans in the dark about Adam Warlock's role in phase five. With the emergence of Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man 3, are we seeing the next great rivalry unfold? All we know is that there's some big cosmic plans brewing and that we can't wait to see what happens next.
