Robin Williams Changed Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's Lives. They Never Got to Repay Him.

"We thought there would be time."

It's been 20 years since the movie Good Will Hunting swept awards season and made Matt Damon and Ben Affleck stars. And Sunday night, at this year's Golden Globes red carpet, Damon took the time to thank the man who made it all possible: Robin Williams.

Damon, who produced this year's Manchester by the Sea, said that he and Ben Affleck only got to make Good Will Hunting, the movie that won them all Oscars and Golden Globes, because Williams signed on. Now, Damon says he and Affleck wish they could have done more to repay Williams before he died in 2014. He elaborated on his memories of Williams in an interview with E! News:

"Oh, man, [I have] a lot of Robin Williams memories, good memories of him. And Ben said recently, it's weird, we always felt like we were going to, we had this incredible debt to pay him back. And we thought there would be time to do that, and just the abruptness of somebody leaving like that, that realization comes that you're never going to be able to pay back this incredible thing somebody did for you. That movie got made because Robin said he wanted to do it. That changed the trajectory of our careers completely, forever."
