A Leni Robredo Documentary Will Premiere at Sundance Film Festival 2024
The pink movement isn’t over—at least not for the highly acclaimed filmmaker behind some of the most hard-hitting local profiles like “Imelda” and “A Thousand Cuts.” Ramona Diaz’s latest documentary "And So It Begins" is a look into Leni Robredo’s presidential campaign in the national elections. Did we mention it is also set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024?
Diaz makes her return to Sundance with a film that offers a glimpse into the battle for democracy in the modern age of media, this time with Robredo at the center stage. "And So It Begins" follows the challenges faced by defenders of democracy in the Philippines in an era of Dutertes and Marcoses in power.
It's considered as a companion piece for "A Thousand Cuts."
"And So It Begins" joins the ranks of other Sundance entries featuring notable names like Kristen Stewart, Pedro Pascal, Lucy Liu, and various other star-studded cast.
The Sundance Film Festival is one of the most respected and celebrated film festivals in the United States. According to Deadline, Sundance received over 17,000 submissions from 153 countries this year—the largest number in the history of the festival. Many films premiering at Sundance have gone on to be nominated and win Oscars.

The festival might be all the way in Utah, but Filipinos will also have the chance to watch the premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Who is Ramona Diaz?
Ramona S. Diaz is a highly acclaimed Filipino-American filmmaker who is best known for her character-driven documentaries.
Some of her notable works include the 2003 film "Imelda", a biographical documentary about the life of Imelda Marcos, and 2020 film “A Thousand Cuts,” a profile of Nobel laureate Maria Ressa. Both movies were previously screened at the Sundance Film Festival.
Another one of her work, “Motherland," received a Special Jury Award at Sundance in 2017. It is a documentary set at an overcrowded and under-resourced maternity hospital in Manila.
