By now, everyone with a Netflix account has seen the streamer’s hit show Squid Game. Since its release, critics and viewers have raved about the show, so much so that even the Squid Game’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk can’t take the hype seriously anymore.
Keeping with the spirit of Squid Game, Hwang is creating a new satire series based on the mind-blowing success of Squid Game—and it’s fittingly called The Best Show on the Planet.
Squid Game became a global phenomenon not just because of the outstanding plot and action. It hit home for many viewers who could relate to the themes of income inequality, consumerism, and capitalism. And yet, the outcome of its success seemed to fall into the game master’s plan.
Squid Game made Netflix millions—probably more than the amount in the jackpot prize and all of the cast and crew combined—and viewers went out of their way to spend their money on Squid Game merchandise. With Hwang helming the satire show, we can’t wait for what he has to say about all the hype surrounding his show and his personal experience of becoming an overnight sensation.
Deadline was the first to report the development of The Best Show on the Planet, and so far, the only update is that the show is in its early planning stages. Hwang is also working on the sequel to Squid Game, which likely won’t come out until late 2023 or 2024.
