Why The 'Stranger Things' Creators Planned To Kill Eleven In Season One

And it was originally called 'Montauk.'

Stranger Things co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer have released a companion book to their Netflix sci-fi series this Halloween.

While it's not giving away spoilers about the forthcoming season, they do give some previous unknown details about seasons one and two, including which characters they were considering killing off.

“Eleven was going to sacrifice herself to save the day,” Ross Duffer reveals. “That was always the end game."

“But once we realised that the show was potentially going to go on longer than one season, we needed to leave it more up in the air, because deep down we knew the show just wouldn’t really work without Eleven. And at that point, we knew how special Millie was. If there was going to be more Stranger Things, Eleven had to come back.”

Steve Harrington (played by Joe Keery) was also meant to die in season one. “This Steve character, he was just supposed to be this giant douchebag,” the book reveals, adding that Keery becoming a fan favorite convinced them to change his destiny.

Elsewhere the book reveals that the original script for the pilot was called Montauk, to pay tribute to their "favorite film of all time," Jaws. Scripts also referred to the Upside-Down as the 'Nether,' and audiences were never actually meant to see it.

"We were never going to go into the Nether, as we originally called it," Matt Duffer says referring to what ended up being called the Upside-Down. "We were only planning to hear this other dimension over radios and walkie-talkies."

He adds, "We thought that'd be scarier. What we don't see is often scarier than what we do. And that worked for a while. But once we got five hours in, we felt the show really needed to open up, expand. It just became increasingly obvious: we had to go into the Upside-Down."
