By Thea Alberto-Masakayan

Every year, Esquire Philippines’ Man at His Best honors extraordinary Filipinos who are reshaping society. These are the men and women who are raising the bar for Filipino creatives, athletes, public servants, and professionals.

This year, we’re celebrating eight mavericks and living legends in film, music, business, politics, and entertainment. From National Artists Ricky Lee and Kidlat Tahimik to Mayor Joy Belmonte and tycoon Ramon Ang, here are the 2023 honorees who exemplify what it means to be a Man at His Best.

Meet Esquire's Icon of the Year, Ricky Lee

How does one craft a story about a writer as outstanding, prolific, and influential as Ricky Lee? You use his own words.

The National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts takes you to the days he left the sleepy town of Daet, Camarines Norte, and gained a profound understanding of disparity, deprivation, and the unfairness of life. Never jaded, he continues to foster an unshakeable empathy toward the marginalized and underprivileged, giving light to their stories, believing in the goodness of strangers, and why he’ll continue to pay the kindness forward for the rest of his life.

A Hard Start In Life

Growing up in Daet, (there were) very small streets, but there were movie houses, malaking loudspeakers sa labas ng movie house, at hindi ako maka-afford na bumili ng ticket. Nakikinig ako dun sa loudspeakers. Daet had a small bridge, near an old church, where I would usually go kapag nalulungkot. Usually, sinasabi ko sa mga tao, kung saan man ako nakarating ngayon, kung ano man ako, lahat ‘yun nagsimula sa Daet. Kapag iniisip ko ang Daet, I remember the places, the buildings, the details, the people there.

The Quest For A Bigger World

And, lagi ko na-imagine na parang there's a bigger world out there. At, ang tawag ko sa mundong ‘yun lagi, that time, is Quiapo, Melting pot ang Quiapo, lahat nagtatagpo sa Quiapo. So, may feeling ako na pag nakarating ako ng Quiapo, magiging mas malaya akong tao.

Reading Is An Escape

Basa ako nang basa nang basa. Noong nabasa ko sa public library yung mga Fyodor Dostoevsky, Russian author, The Brothers Karamazov and then Crime and Punishment, and then later yung mga trabaho ni William Faulkner, parang nakita ko na pwede palang magkuwento this way.

Nothing Like The Joy Of The First Byline

So tinignan ko lahat ng kopya, hinawakan lahat ng pangalan ko, and I think that's what changed my life forever.

And Then Meeting Your Hero

Si Nick Joaquin. I got to work with the personality, the bigger-than-life person. Nagbibiro. Hindi matino kung hindi nakainom ng beer. At sinasabihan ako, na ‘Ricky, kailangan familiar ka sa pop culture if you want to be a writer. Nakasama ko in so many ways.

Keep Writing Anywhere, Everywhere

Yung Andrea [Paano Ba ang Maging Isang Ina?, Nora Aunor, 1990], naisulat ko ‘yun sa Food Court. ‘Yung Sabel [Judy Ann Santos, 2004], nasulat ko siya ng walang storyline, walang sequence treatment, nothing at all, except one meeting with the director, Joel Lamangan. It took me four hours to write the script, na tuloy-tuloy.

You Have to Fight Writer’s Block

You want to be a writer, and it's so fulfilling and exciting. But, you keep avoiding having to sit down to write. The act of writing is a torment. So, hanap ka ng hanap ng dahilan. But I make it a point to write everyday. Whether nasa mood man ako, o may bayad o ganado, o may sakit, et cetera. I have to go and bake, because that's what I'm being paid for. Hindi ‘yan dependent sa mood, or mental block, or anything. There are good days, and there are bad days.

Music Is Essential

When I was writing Para kay B, yung first novel ko, I was playing Coldplay, Viva La Vida, pero paulit-ulit lang siya. And the entire year I was writing. When I was writing Amapola [Si Amapola sa 65 na Kabanata] which took three years, nagiba-iba na, naging Kings of Leon, or The Decemberists, or Sufjan Stevens. The Who, Simon and Garfunkel and so on.

Continuously Discover Your Own Writing Style

I don't stay put in one place. Dahil ‘yun ang naging buhay ko. Wala akong roots. Wala akong family na solid. Namatay ‘yung parents ko na maaga. Inampon ako. And then lumayas ako. Ngayon ako naging rooted with my family.

Dahil rootless ako, it happens also sa writing ko. In terms of style, in terms of the writing, in terms of the structure and so on. Lipat-lipat sya. Ganun din eh. So, the formula is just write from whoever and whatever you are. Embrace.

Use Your Experiences In Crafting Characters

May characters na fictional, may character na totoo, may non-horror character, may multo, et cetera. Lahat, mixed. Kung pagkain ako, halo-halo. Hindi siya gulaman at sago lang,

…ang dami kong naranasan na deprivation for me to be able to say na I think maski pa-paano naintindihan ko rin yung deprivation na dinadaan ng ibang tao. I think that's part of the reason why karamihan ang mga bida ko sa mga sinusulat ko, mga underprivileged na mga tao, mga marginalized, mga OFWs, mga prostitutes, mga gays or lesbians or mga inaapi, mga security guards, mga nasa margins ng society.

Intersperse Truth With Fiction

Ah, Himala. Being amazed at Ishmael Bernal na bigger-than-life on the set. Then being amazed at Nora [Aunor] na ‘yung monologue niya, nirevise ko on the set. Totally nawala lahat sa original draft ko. Ang natira na lang yung 'walang himala!'

One take lang lahat. And then she did it. I was amazed at the extras and the cast na thousands na nagtatakbuhan. Sand dunes ‘yun, e. Pababa yung buhangin, e. Pumapasok sa bibig mo at sa sapatos mo. Nagtatakbuhan sila during the stampede scene na nagkakapatungan at nakakabanggaan. At lahat sila mga totoo. Walang prosthetic yung buong pelikula.

Totoong pilay. Totoong bulag. Totoong naka-wheelchair. Totoong may bukol na malaki. Totoong mga sakit.

So, lahat sila nagtatakbuhan. And it was happening right before my eyes.

Learning Should Be Free

Nung nagsimula ako mag-sulat, walang workshops, walang nag-mementor. Hindi ko alam kung saan ako pupunta. Even if natututo ako kina Lino, kina Bernal, wala yung formally tuturuan ka. Walang workshops sa pagsusulat noon.

I think, baka pinakaunang writing workshop sa Pilipinas yung akin.

So, I'll do it. But, in the end…kung yung workshoppers natututo sa akin, mag-isa lang ako. Ako natututo sa kanila, 35 sila lahat. Talo ko sila. Magkakaibang personalidad, magkakaibang estilo, magkakaibang na-share sa akin.

Nabubuksan yung mata ko in different ways.

Acknowledge Your Cluttered Mind

I'm all over the place. Hindi ako organisadong tao. When I write scripts, I write two to three scripts at the same time. Sabay-sabay sila, lipat-lipat lang. Hindi ako maka-focus sa isang trabaho up to now, laging may kasabay na ibang trabaho. When I wrote Himala, I was writing Moral. Ngayon, I'm writing Trip to Quiapo 2, my memoirs, two scripts, isang VivaMax at isang GMA. Sabay-sabay lahat ‘yun.

Utilize The Power Of Words

With every word, with every story that I write, maski pa paano makatulong ako na maging mabuo ang ibang tao para maging mas tao na sila kaysa dati. I think, then, kung nagagawa ko yun, then I can say na totoo rin akong tao or nagiging totoo akong tao. I don't think we have any business living on this earth kung if we don't live for others.

Believe In The Goodness Of Strangers

Hindi ako takot sa strangers. All throughout my life. I suppose that's why twice na ako na-hold up sa taxi before, and napapasok kung saan-saang gusot at gulo, kasi hindi ako takot magtiwala sa strangers. Kasi all throughout life, laging may strangers na tumutulong sa akin.

And I think that, in a way, greatly shaped my consciousness. Ang pagkatao, my beliefs.

Never Glorify Abusers

Hope Is Never Lost

I don't think we can ever lose that hope eh.

Bawat kwento, bawat writer, pag nagsama-sama lahat kami bilang isang malaking ilog or malaking bagyo ng ulan, then marami ang magagawa. Malaki ang magagawa.

Above All, Be A Good Human

And in doing that, nabubuo na rin niya ang kanyang sarili.

Raise Your Children To Be Good

I hope totoo yun. I hope totoo pag sinabi ng tao si Ricky, mabait, in the real sense, na mabait.

Mahirap maging mabait.

Mahirap maging mabait sa mundong ito. Sa lipunan nating ito.

Ang dami-daming mga puwersa sa palibot na hinihila ka in this direction or in that direction para maging vindictive o para maging cynical o para magalit o para mawala ang pag-asa. But, I think it's important na in the midst of all this, maging mabait ka na tao, sa iba, at sa sarili.
