UP vs. Ateneo: Which School Graduated More of the Country’s Richest?

Besides the battle between the Fighting Maroons and Blue Eagles, here's another head-to-head we're interested in.

School pride runs deep in the Philippines. Just look at the amount of support both the UP Fighting Maroons and the Ateneo Blue Eagles have been receiving during UAAP Season 81’s men’s basketball finals—both in audience turnaround and social media.

The supporters range from current students, alumni and even just ardent fans of each team. The Mall of Asia arena during Game 1 was, in fact, filled with prominent personalities, government officials and celebrities. Even former Senate President Manuel Villar, who’s also now known the second richest man in the country, was also seen among the crowds last December 1.

To know who else among the country’s richest are probably cheering for either one of the universities battling it out in the much talked about match, we compiled a list of all the graduates of both schools that made it to Forbes’ 2018 Philippines’ 50 Richest list.

US magazine Forbes listed 48 Filipino tycoons in this year’s list of the Philippines’ richest, which was released last September. We looked through the annual reports of their respective companies and obtained information about their educational background, both undergraduate and graduate studies—whichever is available.

Of the 48 in the list, 25 percent or 12 of them graduated from either the University of the Philippines or Ateneo de Manila University. Nine or 18.8 percent of the total obtained their bachelor’s or master’s degrees—or both—from the former, while only three came from the latter.
