The World's Largest Solar Power Facility Will Rise in the Philippines

Currently, the world’s largest solar power facility is the Bhadla Solar Park in India, which has a capacity of 2245MW. That will easily be dwarfed by the Philippines when Enrique Razon’s Prime Infrastructure Holdings, Inc. (Prime Infra) finishes building a 3,500MW facility that will be built by Terra Solar, Prime Infra’s power firm. 

Terra Solar is a joint venture between Razon’s Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc. and Leandro Leviste’s  Solar Philippines Power Project Holdings Inc.

Prime Infra president and CEO Guillaume Lucci said the project is a record-breaking contribution to energy security. The project will be undertaken with Meralco, which will distribute the generated power as electricity among the households it services. 

“We, at Prime Infra, are delighted to move forward with Meralco on this record-breaking project that highlights solar power’s important contribution to strengthening the country’s energy security,” Lucci said in a statement. 

“Solar (power), which is normally looked at for peaking, is now being made available by Terra Solar to answer Meralco’s mid-merit requirement, thereby addressing both the need for additional capacity and compliance with RPS. The Department of Energy and Meralco should be commended for approving a project that is not only transformational for the renewable energy landscape, but also for managing to do so at a competitive price,” added Lucci. 

Meralco aims to source up to 1,500 MW of its power requirements from renewable energy sources. Terra Solar will provide 600MW to Meralco by 2026, and another 250MW in 2027.
