Manny Villar and Enrique Razon Kick Off 2020 As The Philippines' Richest, According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index

A happy new year for them, indeed.

Filipino business tycoons Manuel Villar and Enrique Razon are entering the new decade as the only Philippine billionaires to make it on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which lists the 500 wealthiest people in the world.

The index is a daily ranking of the world’s richest, and the figures and rankings are updated at the end of every business day after the trading floor closes in New York.

Villar, chairman of property giant Vista Land & Lifescapes, the 70-year-old self-made billionaire is currently the 260th richest person in the world and the richest Filipino individual as of the moment, according to Bloomberg. His net worth as of January 2020 is currently estimated to be $6.92 billion or P350.77 billion. This is a 53.9 percent increase from his wealth one year ago today, as Bloomberg reports Villar grew his wealth by $2.43 billion within the span of 12 months.

Meanwhile, Enrique Razon comes in as the second richest Filipino and the 454th richest individual in the world, with a total net worth of $4.76 billion or P241.28 billion. The chairman of International Container Terminal Services, the port tycoon’s investment portfolio also includes gold, oil, and the gambling complex Solaire Resort & Casino. The 59-year-old’s wealth jumped by 25.4 percent or $965 million in the last year alone.

The latest update on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index differs from Forbes Asia’s 2019 ranking of the Philippines’ 50 Richest list. On the Forbes list, the six Sy siblings were considered as a group, which allowed them to top the list thanks to their massive combined wealth of $17.2 billion. However, Bloomberg’s index only considers individuals, and as such, Villar was bumped up as the richest Filipino individual. 2019 was also the year the late taipan John Gokongwei, Jr. passed away at the age of 93 years old, allowing Razon to claim the title of second richest individual in the Philippines.

Notable absences from the Bloomberg index are Filipino tycoons Jaime Zobel de Ayala, Lucio Tan, Tony Tan Caktiong, and Ramon Ang, whose individual net worths weren’t enough to make the cut.

As of January 2, 2020, Bloomberg reports that the top five richest individuals in the world are currently: Jeff Bezos of Amazon with a net worth of $115 billion; Bill Gates of Microsoft with a net worth of $113 billion; Bernard Arnault of LVMH with a net worth of $105 billion; Warren Buffet of Berkshire Hathaway with a net worth of $89.3 billion; and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook with a net worth of $79.4 billion.
