Forbes has just released its annual Billionaires list, and the number of dollar billionaires from the Philippines had dropped from 20 in 2022 to only 14 in 2023. They might still be swimming in billions, but half of the world’s richest got poorer (if you can even say that) in 2023. So, for once, the rich didn’t get richer. From 2,668 billionaires in 2022, the world now counts 2,640 billionaires in 2023. The exclusive group’s total worth is now down $500 million from 2022, estimated to be about $12.2 trillion in April 2023.
Even billionaires like Elon Musk and Warren Buffett weren’t spared from the global reduction in wealth. One man who did endure: Bernard Arnault, the king of luxury. The LVMH scion’s net worth reached $211 billion in 2023, making the fashion CEO the richest man in the world.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, the title of richest man is retained by Manuel Villar for the nth time in a row. The real estate mogul is joined by port king Enrique Ramon Jr., SM’s Sy siblings, San Miguel’s Ramon Ang, and the Philippines’ last taipan, Lucio Tan. There are no new names on the list as most hail from the Philippines’ wealthiest families. Meanwhile, Monde Nissin’s Betty Ang, Converge’s Maria Grace and Dennis Anthony Uy, and the Genomal brothers were dropped from the list, and Roberto Ongpin passed away last year.
These six former dollar billionaires are no longer on the list, yet this year’s roundup of Filipino dollar billionaires still have a combined net worth of $41.4 billion (or P2.25 trillion).
