Ateneo de Manila University Is Ranked the Number One University in the Philippines
Ateneo de Manila University claims the title of the best university in the Philippines based on the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2023. In its debut appearance on the Asian University list, Ateneo de Manila ranked 84, higher than any other Philippine university on the list and the only one to breach the top 100 bracket.
Only three other Philippine universities made the list, namely University of the Philippines, which placed in the 201-250 bracket; De La Salle University, which placed in the 501-600 bracket; and Mapua University, which placed in the 601+ bracket.

All four Philippine universities were recognized in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023, with Ateneo leading the pack once more. ADMu, UP, DLSU, and MAPUA maintained their rankings from the 2022 list, showing no movement. ADMU stayed in the 351-400 bracket, UP in the 801-1000 bracket, DLSU in the 1201-1500 bracket, and MAPUA in the 1501+ bracket.
Going back to the Asian University rankings, the Philippine universities were judged based on teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook, with added weightings to reflect “the priorities of Asian institutions,” according to THE.
"We are honored to enter Times Higher Education's Asia rankings for the first time, especially being ranked in the top 100," said Fr Roberto Yap SJ, President. "This feat is the product of years of hard work of the entire community—from faculty and researchers, to staff, professionals, and administrators, to our students.”
A total of 669 universities from 31 Asian territories made the list this year. The Asian universities that topped the list were Tsinghua University in China, Peking University, National University of Singapore, University of Hong Kong, Nanyang Technology University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Tokyo, Sudan University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Earlier this month, Ateneo also ranked first among Philippine institutions in the THE Impact Rankings, which measures the impact of universities on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
