The Dalai Lama Apologizes After a Video of Him Asking a Child to Suck His Tongue Surfaces
The Dalai Lama is in hot water after a video of him kissing a young boy back in late February surfaced online recently. To make matters worse, he had also asked the child to “suck his tongue.”
In the viral video, a young male student at the Dalai Lama’s temple in Dharamshala went up to the mic during the event to ask if he could hug the Dalai Lama. The said interaction was said to have happened during a ceremony in honor of 100 students graduating from the Indian M3M Foundation.
The 87-year-old spiritual leader told the child to come up to where he was seated. We can hear him say to the boy to kiss him on one side of his cheek. The kid would proceed to do so and give him a hug afterward.

But the increasingly disturbing parts of the clip came after. The Dalai Lama made the boy stay and motioned to his lips. He would proceed to make an attempt to kiss the boy on the mouth. “And suck my tongue,” he would say after. We can see the spiritual leader sticking out his tongue and then withdrawing as soon as the child's face comes closer. He laughed it off and hugged the boy again.
Tenzin Gyatso, the holiest figure in Tibetan Buddhism and a Nobel Prize winner, received widespread condemnation online for his inappropriate behavior. The office of the Dalai Lama would release a statement regarding the incident, saying: “His holiness wishes to apologize to the boy and his family as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused... His holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident.”
This isn't the first time the Dalai Lama has faced controversy. In 2019, he made headlines for saying that, should a female Dalai Lama succeed him, she must be "more attractive. Before this, he had also suggested that we should "keep Europe for Europeans."
