After Calls for the Separation of Mindanao, Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Responds
Amidst the war of words between once-united groups, calls for the separation of Mindanao have been revived again for a new decade. The government has made it clear that any perceived destabilization threats are to be dealt with. Leaders, including Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim, have opposed the idea of an independent Mindanao.
Similarly, the Department of National Defense (DND) made it clear where its loyalties lie. Chief Gilbert Teodoro released a statement recently, calling for stronger "reinforcement" of its Constitutional duty.
"The mandate of the Department of National Defense is to secure the sovereignty of the State and integrity of the national territory as enshrined in the Constitution. We will strictly enforce this mandate whether externally or internally," the Defense Secretary states clearly.

While the statement didn't mention anyone in particular, it does show that the DND will not tolerate any threats to democracy. It also comes on the heels of heated discussions regarding an independent Mindanao, leading to factions and rifts between once-certain political allies.
Among one of the first people who pushed for an independent Mindanao was said to have been Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez. They floated the idea of pursuing a signature campaign for such, which would mimic the recent campaign or "People's Initiative" in the Lower House.
The National Security Council echoed the DND's sentiments, as well. On Sunday, Secretary Eduardo Año said in a statement: “The National Government will not hesitate to use its authority and forces to quell and stop any and all attempts to dismember the Republic. Any attempt to secede any part of the Philippines will be met by the government with resolute force, as it remains steadfast in securing the sovereignty and integrity of the national territory."
Other provincial governments, like those from Maguindanao del Sur and Sultan Kudarat, have also stated recently that they stand by a "united Philippines."
