JG Summit Releases Statement on Reported Cybersecurity Attack

On Thursday, August 8, reports have been circulating of an alleged cybersecurity threat at JG Summit Holdings.

However, the company has yet to confirm whether or not there was a calculated ransomware attack. It did, nevertheless, say that it would be implementing enhanced security measures for the protection of its data.

"We are working closely with our cybersecurity experts and partners to proactively investigate and assess the situation," JG Summit said in a statement. "We take this matter very seriously. We recognize that many organizations have faced similar challenges in the current cybersecurity landscape. And, therefore, protecting our data and maintaining the trust of our stakeholders remain our top priority."

JG Summit remains one of the largest corporations in the Philippines. It has interests in property, transportation, media, manufacturing, and food and beverage, among others.

Cyberattacks on both the public and private sectors have made headlines in the past few months. In June, for instance, Jollibee Food Corp. reported a data breach that compromised 11 million customers' information. The incident had been one of the biggest data leaks ever, with those involved losing their birth dates and senior identification number records to an unknown hacker. According to the National Privacy Commission, it might have been connected to a larger global hacking network.

Government offices such as the Philippine Health Insurance System (PhilHealth) and the Department of Migrant Workers reported similar incidents of cyberattacks over the past year, as well. In the case of the former, names, addresses, dates of birth, sex, phone numbers, and PhilHealth identification numbers were potentially at risk upon the announcement. Affected individuals were asked to monitor credit card reports and to change passwords on online accounts.
