PDP-Laban Named Dominant Majority Party by COMELEC, But Factions Within Remain Unresolved
The Partido Demokratiko Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) and the Nacionalista Party (NP) have been named dominant majority party and dominant minority party in the upcoming May 2022 polls, as per the Commission on Elections.
In Resolution no. 10787, the 10 major political parties are:
- National Unity Party, Aksyon Demokratiko
- Partido Federal ng Pilipinas
- Liberal Party
- United Nationalist Alliance
- Lakas-CMD
- National People's Coalition
- Partido para sa Demokratikong Reporma
- Akbayan
- Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino
Under the law, the parties will be entitled to one official watching in every polling area and canvassing center. Watchers of the parties will be given preference. Each party will also be furnished copies of the election results and certificates of canvass. The 10 major political parties will have access, as well.
Both PDP-Laban President Sec. Alfonso Cusi and Chairman Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III have each filed separate petitions for accreditation as the dominant majority party, dominant minority party, and 10 major national parties.
COMELEC ended up treating the requests as one from a single political party. The commission looks to release the resolution between the two factions soon.
In March, Pimentel, who is the son of PDP-Laban co-founder, the late Senate President Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr., said that a "cleansing" of the party is in order after the elections. He hopes to rebuild the party in line with its true principles and original vision. PDP-Laban was created to battle the Marcos dictatorship in the late '70s and was inaugurated as a national party in 1982.
He expressed this after the Cusi-led faction endorsed the presidential bid of former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
