Vice President Sara Duterte Officially Quits Marcos Cabinet
On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Vice President Sara Duterte has announced that she has officially stepped down as a member of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s cabinet, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) confirms.
Secretary Cheloy Garafil said that she resigned as Department of Education (DepEd) secretary and vice chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) on the same day.
According to the PCO, Duterte declined to offer a reason for her abrupt resignation. "We thank her for her service,” Garafil noted in a statement.

During her tenure as DepEd chief, she provided Professional Development Programs and school-based training packages for educators and school leaders. Earlier this year, she even promised to amend an Administrative Order to allow Health Insurance for our teachers and non-teaching personnel.
Last year, DepEd would end up creating 9,659 new teaching positions, 3,500 Administrative Officer II positions, and 1,500 Project Development Officer I positions. The Hardship Index cut-off for the Special Hardship Allowance, on the other hand, would have 16,532 more teachers from 1,812 schools eligible for the Special Hardship Allowance.
However, it was a tumultuous couple of months for Dutere. Her time as Vice President would also be marked by controversy and the UniTeam's public spat.
In 20224, she had been criticized for her P650 million request for confidential funds. Her feud with House Speaker Martin Romualdez and First Lady Liz Araneta-Marcos has been well-documented over the course of the past year.
She nevertheless will continue to serve as the administration's vice president.
