Fashion Fusion Celebrates Indo-PH Diplomatic Ties

Fashion took center stage with a hundred beautifully crafted masterpieces as Indonesia and the Philippines celebrated the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, established through an agreement on November 24, 1949.

Dubbed "Two Nations, One Fashion," the event showcased the artistry of acclaimed Filipino fashion meister Renee Salud and Indonesian designer Merdi Sihombing.

Sihombing, celebrated for his inventive use of Ulos, a traditional fabric from North Sumatra, kicked off the show with a stunning collection.

Indonesian men wore sarongs, mostly with a checkered pattern, paired with batik shirts or the baju takwa jacket for religious events. Women wore the kebaya over their batik skirts/wraps.

Salud, on the other hand, created Filipino silhouettes using Indonesian textiles like batik, tenun ikat, and songket. Men wore the barong, while women proudly donned the terno, particularly its modern iterations for special and important occasions.

The UST Singers heightened the drama when they performed classical and neo-classical pieces as the 100-piece collection was presented to invited guests, which filled the venue to the rafters.

The event was organized by the Indonesian Embassy in Manila, in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
