When fashion starts getting post-ironic, it can be hard to tell what's cool and what isn't. Over the past two years, the 'ugly' sneaker trend has been a prime example of this post-ironic madness. It's the kind of trend that blurs the lines between good, gross, and could-potentially-grow-on-you, making it difficult to settle on a permanent opinion of taste. The Balenciaga Triple S or the Nike Monarch, for instance, could have easily disgusted you at first, before winning you over eventually.

If you're still in the 'doubt' phase of appreciating ugly sneakers, Adidas Originals' latest might get you to come around.

The Yung 96 is, like all the chunky sneakers in vogue today, inspired by the bygone '90s. But it's not quite as loud, and its silhouette is closer to a shapely retro runner than an edgy statement piece. Its first colorways are plain and simple as well. Check it out:

Perhaps you're lukewarm about chunky, 'ugly' sneakers now. No one could blame you, because some of the trendier ones are actually quite hideous (looking at you, Fila Disruptor).

But think of the Yung 96 as your gateway into this wing of the sneaker universe, where you might actually find more models that are worthy of being added to your rotation. Its upper is made with layered nubuck and mesh, possessed with the charm of a simple, standard throwback runner and with a little extra flare thanks to that lightweight EVA sole.

Two of the first colorways to arrive here in the Philippines are black-on-white and white-on-white, both with a nice purple accent at the tongue. They're available at Adidas Philippines' online store for the full retail price of P5,500.
