Europe Welcomes Jollibee, Purveyor of Chickenjoy and Sprezzatura

The world’s happiest bee celebrates its first European branch in style.

Filipinos have a moral obligation to share Chickenjoy with the world. To keep such a pure and absolute good from the rest of the human race would be a gross miscarriage of our civic duties as global citizens. That’s why Jollibee’s first branch in Europe, which will soon be opening in Milan, is cause for celebration.

In a Facebook post late last week, Jollibee Italia (has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?) posted a teaser animation for its first branch, featuring the style icon we never knew we needed:

Look at him*! He looks like he’s about to walk into Pitti Uomo to peruse the summer collection of Brunello Cucinelli. The world’s happiest bee, the pride of the Philippines, dressed to rub elbows with famous fashion editors while gawking at bloggers and furtively posing for “candid” street style photos. Scooch over, Nick Wooster and all you other Pitti peacocks. Jollibee has arrived.

Let’s break down the look.

First, the jacket. In lieu of Jollibee’s usual red notch lapel jacket is a double-breasted peak lapel jacket with two flap pockets in front. It’s a classic piece of Neapolitan suiting—strong individual elements that altogether look laidback and effortless.

He tops it off with a yellow brooch for contrast, and tucks a white pocket square into the jacket’s left breast pocket, to match his white shirt. In keeping with his signature look, the black bowtie remains.

Next, the pants. The big red bee is clearly an astute observer of menswear trends, because pleated trousers have been staging a comeback lately, and here he is in a pair of indigo ones. It’s likely that he had these tailored, because they’re perfectly slim through the thigh (part) and slightly tapered down to the hem, cuffed once for a slick, no-break look. It’s a big step up, considering that he doesn’t exactly wear pants on a regular day here in the Philippines. What with the weather and all.

Then, those shoes. Brown lace-up brogues are a staple in every man’s footwear rotation, and Jollibee wears them with ease. And because these are probably a size 62, you can be sure that they’re bespoke one-of-ones.

To top it off, Jollibee wears a straw boater hat, perfect for warm, breezy afternoons along the Italian countryside. This type of hat is great for Manila weather too, but unless you have antennas, we don’t recommend punching holes in the brim.

Now, if we can only find out what he’s keeping in that luggage trunk…

*We aren't certain, but we acknowledge that Jollibee may actually be a her.
