Francis Libiran Designs Team Philippines' Official SEA Games 2019 Parade Uniforms
Just a few months before the official start of the 30th Southeast Asian Games, local designer Francis Libiran reveals his sketches for the local team's official parade uniform. This uniform will be the Philippine team's attire at the opening of the games.
"Depicting the vibrant colors and meaningful symbols of the Philippine national flag, these designs of the famous barong Tagalog present a modern take on the Philippines’ national costume," the designer captioned his Facebook post. His reimagined version of the barong Tagalog features an embossed design of sun rays and also has a blue and red collar, all inspired by the Philippine flag. This blue and red collar accent made from “delicate Philippine fibers and materials” was further customized with “ art deco embroidery with a detachable alternate collar so that they can have two looks in one.”
The designer specifically chose to create a barong because he figures “it is our national uniform and it best represents the Philippines in all world events. I thought it would be the best way to represent our country with pride and honor as we host the 30th Southeast Asian Games,” he tells Preview in an interview.
Francis' modern barong is paired with slim-fit black trousers for both men and women athletes. “I put into consideration that our athletes have different body shapes and thought that making them wear a barong top with trousers will make the entire look more cohesive during the parade,” Francis says.”
