BGYO's Gelo Rivera Is All About Dressing Like the Main Character
Gelo Rivera is standing outdoors in Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park in the heat of Bangkok wearing a Tommy Hilfiger jacket worn on top of a striped blue sweater. It's a difficult thing to pull off, but if there was someone who could do it, it's the P-pop star. He isn't doing it for nothing, though. We're here for the American fashion brand's special event to celebrate the Fall 2023 collection.
With his look, the BGYO member could easily blend in as a student at the prestigious university. It also fits the brief he set for himself which was to dress up like a boyfriend. "I styled myself for the Tommy Hilfiger trip with a boyfriend-coded vibe. [I] opted for a laid-back and clean aesthetic that suits the similar weather in Thailand and my home country, the Philippines," he explains. "I really appreciate Tommy Hilfiger's versatile approach to style while consistently delivering high-quality and classic pieces."
Rivera paired the jacket and sweater with khakis and chunky boots topped with a canvas tote bag. The fit toes the line between casual and preppy, and it was all intentional. "I'm drawn to Tommy Hilfiger's style code because of their fearlessness in exploring various colors and blending of preppy and casual elements in their clothes."

After all the celebrations in Thailand, Rivera chatted with us about all sorts of things going through his mind. From Tommy Hilfiger to favorite style moments to dressing like a main character to on- and off-stage fashion, we covered a lot of ground. Plus, he shared some of his pet peeves that made us nod along.

On Tommy Hilfiger
I've been buying some Tommy Hilfiger pieces years ago, before entering show business. So, I was really surprised and happy when I got invited to participate in a Tommy Hilfiger launch in Bangkok and they gave me clothes that I really like. From the jackets, tops, pants, bags, and accessories. They're super comfortable, stylish, and made with excellent craftsmanship.
His Fashion Favorites
Each time I perform with my group BGYO at significant events or in different eras corresponding to our songs, every costume or style holds a special place in my heart. Witnessing the growth of my brothers and myself over time brings a profound sense of fulfillment. Each outfit serves as a nostalgic reminder of the diverse emotions and music we've shared, creating memories that I'll cherish forever.
On Dressing Up
I have fun playing around with different styles, but lately, when I dress myself, I usually imagine a look as if I'm a leading man in a movie or series. And when I'm looking for a more non-casual style, lately, I lean toward a rugged bad-boy aesthetic with an urban vibe and different textures. I'm experimental so I find that I can easily adjust my style, depending on the occasion.
Experimenting With Style
I enjoy experimenting with the various aspects of fashion and grooming. I always aim to align my style if I'm going to a specific event while simultaneously elevating and defining my look to stand out uniquely while being natural to me. Basta hindi pilit.
On Self-Expression
Fashion serves as a way for us individuals to express our identity, personality, and taste to the world. It provides an enjoyable outlet for showcasing our creativity through the styles we create.
Some Peeves
Not being listened to, people who don't know how to say thank you and sorry, people who are loud in places where majority of people are sleeping, and people who are full of themselves are just some of my pet peeves.
On Making a Statement
A piece of clothing or an accessory stands out when it's unique and fresh—having timeless quality that resonates, regardless of trends. The combination of innovation and versatility makes it memorable and enduring. Hmm, if it works, it works.
