Prada and National Geographic Work Together Again for the Oceans
On the occasion of the release of the new Prada Re-Nylon collection and campaign, Prada reveals the second phase of the collaboration with National Geographic Creative Works. A partnership born in 2019 with a series of short films focused on the process behind Prada Re-Nylon: from the phase of collecting plastic waste from the ocean (such as fishing nets) and from landfills, or from textile fiber waste, up to regeneration in Econyl, through a circular approach.
For this second chapter, composed of three episodes, Prada and National Geographic Creative Works delve into "the why" of Prada Re-Nylon, exploring the dangers facing some of the most delicate ocean and aquatic ecosystems in the world, and how it is possible to create a positive impact. Specifically, the first episode focuses on the Indo-Pacific region and the islands of the Indian Ocean: it examines the disappearance of coral reefs and the actions implemented by local communities to counteract their potential harmful consequences; the second, which explores the Arctic, highlights the problem of ocean warming, analyzing the repercussions of humans and their way of life on the environment, showing the knowledge that can be acquired from indigenous communities; the latest in-depth study presents the Mediterranean ocean ecosystem, and documents how human activity has given rise to invasive species with harmful effects on fishing communities, discovering how to contribute to mitigating the problem before it is too late.
This project highlights the vital role of ocean awareness, while also highlighting how communication can help achieve lasting change by addressing and even halting harmful effects. On the other hand, Prada Re-Nylon represents an ideology and an approach beyond the boundaries of fashion: it is part of the mission of the Prada Group which aspires to educate, spark new dialogues and raise awareness, with particular attention to social responsibility. Furthermore, from July 2023, 1 percent of the proceeds from the Re-Nylon collection supports Sea Beyond, the educational program to raise awareness about ocean pollution and conservation launched in 2019 by the Prada Group and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.
