The Men of 'The Lion King' are Telling Us to Wear Whatever We Want
If you need more convincing about the crazy, cool state of menswear today, just take a look at the red carpet of The Lion King's world premiere. There were big, bold patterns and non-suits. There were
1| Donald Glover
As befits the king of the jungle, Glover roars onto the red carpet with a bold statement: an on-trend '70s look anchored by a big-pattern suit in the color of
2| Chiwetel Ejiofor
Scar wants to tell you the following: It's okay to wear loose trousers. It's okay to wear a double-breasted jacket. It's okay to wear both at the same time. Also, he's really a nice guy in person.
3| Blue Ivy Carter and Beyonce Knowles-Carter
Why is B on this list of men? It is because she is Beyoncé and also wearing a tux fashioned into a crystallized fantasia. Gender-bending is awesome—if you can pull it off or are Bey. (Hi, Blue!)
4| Jon Favreau
This guy looks familiar because he plays Happy Hogan, the BFF of Iron Man and now the minder of Spider-Man in the MCU. When not in front of the camera, Favreau is an accomplished producer and director; he, in fact, is both for this one. So, for the suit of this project, only a trusty suit will do.
6| Seth Rogen
Rogen and Glover are cut from the same cloth, in that they prefer
7| Billy Eichner
The comedian whose trademark is high-energy yelling is a perfect fit for Timon. Also perfect is his ruddy suit with a razor-sharp fit and those shoes.
8| Keegan-Michael Key
Maybe he wants to appear as sinister as Kamair, the hyena he plays in the movie, or maybe he just knows that, even in the Age of Wear What You Want, a three-piece suit in black is powerful.
9| Eric Andre
If Azizi, who is part of the dastardly hyena pack, tells you to wear pink, is it good advice or a trap?
10| Mandi, John, and Atandwa Kani
In the movie, John (center) plays the spiritual eccentric, Rafiki. On the red carpet, he similarly plays a very interesting wearer of clothes. Kudos to everyone for coordinating.
11| JD McRary
“Yup, I wore this jacket embroidered with a lion's head because I am young and also the young Simba.”
12| Aubrey Joseph
“I am not the young Simba of this movie, but the young Simba of the Broadway musical, and so I will dress more casually in a matching trouser and vest.”
13| Pedro Pascal
Pascal seems lost in this parade of splendid dressers, but hey, at least, he looks cool. Also, note the French Tuck.
14| Lance and Berkeley Brynn Gross
Gross is not in the movie but we had to include him because this is great (and sweet).
