Filipino Designer Jonathan Matti Collaborates With Famous Wallpaper House De Gournay
Philippine interior designer Jonathan Matti truly embraces the idea of bespoke. Every project he takes on is an exercise in originality, beauty, and style. To those familiar with his work, it comes as no surprise that Jonathan’s name was at the very top of esteemed British-based design firm de Gournay’s list of Philippines design partners to collaborate with.
Last week at an intimate event at the de Gournay showroom in Paris, Matti and the firm’s management, alongside de Gournay’s official Philippine representatives, Elements Fine Furnishing Fabrics Inc., unveiled “Latina Manila.” The new motif, painted in the style of Papiers Peints Panoramiques, takes its inspiration from Matti’s own elegant aesthetic and the rich Philippine landscapes and decorative architecture. Details of the scenes also include the flora and fauna of the Southeast Asian islands such as the flame tree and groves of bamboo specific to Manila and its immediate surroundings. The artwork evokes “a memory of colonial splendor – depicted in the exquisite coloring of a fading light,” while the scene combines various styles of Philippine architecture and costume that include the traditional and the modern, as well as the “industrial wealth and agricultural austerity.”

The Paris event brought together Matti’s clients and friends, as well as other designers, who were treated to a first-look at the finished wall covering. For the event, four panels were specially installed onto a custom-made, folding screen. The full scene will be available at the beginning of 2018.
