In His Youth

Born in Davao City, Dennis Ang Uy hails from a third-generation Chinese-Filipino family. His grandparents, Ega Uy and Tao Sui Eng, emigrated from Fujian, China, and ran a fishing equipment and bread store. His parents were also entrepreneurs who traded copra. For Uy, it was clear from the start: running a business runs in the blood. It comes as no surprise that he himself started side hustles at an early age– selling things to his classmates, such as school supplies and basketball cards.

Uy then pursued a Bachelor of Science in Business Management at De La Salle University (DLSU) in Manila, graduating in 1993. During college, he began trading stocks, and his profit from this venture set the stage for his independent business career. After graduating, however, he spent a decade helping his parents in their copra business, earning valuable experience as he spent time with the seasoned entrepreneurs around him.

Eventually, he decided to carve his own path, launching a barbecue restaurant called Dencio’s (not to be mistaken for the restaurant chain in Manila), which specialized in chicken inasal. Over time, they managed to expand to six branches, but it was at this point that Uy decided to turn the restaurant chain over to his sister as he sought to enter the oil retailing business.

Without question, his early exposure to his family’s businesses provided a solid foundation, but his ability to identify opportunities set him apart and defined his future endeavors. Still, Uy credits his collaborative leadership style as the key factor that bolstered his success even from the beginning.

Dennis Uy's Business Empire

Dennis’ empire kicked off in 2002 with the establishment of Udenna Corporation. Among his first major ventures, he focused on oil distribution with a six-million-barrel oil terminal in Davao City. But that was never going to be the endgame for him – he was always intent on starting his own brand.

“Hindi naman pwede benta lang nang benta (You can’t just sell forever),” Dennis said in an interview with The Philippine Star. His main struggle, however, was coming up with the brand’s name, eventually hiring someone who came up with Phoenix Petroleum.

In 2005, Phoenix Petroleum opened its first station in Digos City, Davao del Sur. Uy’s sights were set even higher, though, as he aimed to disrupt the country’s “Big Three” oil companies at that time: Petron, Shell, and Chevron. In 2007, Phoenix became the first Davao-based company listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange. They rapidly expanded across the nation, launching over 500 gasoline stations nationwide–earning 8% of the market share by 2021.

Highlighting Uy’ ambition to compete on a global scale, Phoenix also forayed into the international markets through a trading office in Singapore, while he also acquired the Japanese convenience store FamilyMart’s Philippine operations and invested in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with Malaysia’s Petronas.

Udenna’s portfolio also consists of other ventures that span several industries, such as logistics (Chelsea Logistics Holdings Corp.), telecommunications (DITO Telecommunity Corporation), real estate (Clark Global City), gaming (Emerald Bay Integrated Resort), and Education (Enderun Colleges).

Despite these successes, Uy’s rapid expansion encountered financial challenges. His Emerald Bay Integrated Resort was supposed to launch in 2022, but due to financial constraints, it has faced massive delays and mounting liabilities. Originally, they were supposed to partner with Enrique Razon Jr.’s Bloomberry Resorts Corporation, but the deal was dropped in March 2023. They found a new partner in Cebu-based AppleOne of Ray Manigsaca, but that also fell through by the end of 2023. Their third attempt was with Tiger Resort Leisure Entertainment, operator of Okada Manila–by July 2024 their deal went awry. A month ago, however, Uy’s Udenna signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Yuchengco and House Speaker Martin Romualdez’s EEI, which could finally bring their five-star beachfront resort and casino to fruition.

Impact on Philippine Society and Economy

Uy's ventures have generated significant employment and economic opportunities. According to their website, Udenna employs over 9,000 personnel and continues to create jobs through its diverse enterprises. At its peak, FamilyMart grew to over 65 branches, opening the country’s biggest branch at the Udenna Tower in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Taguig. On the other hand, thousands of students graduate from one of the Philippines’ most prestigious culinary arts and hospitality management colleges, Enderun Colleges, which is also located in BGC.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is one of Udenna’s mission cornerstones with Udenna Foundation and Phoenix Philippines Foundation. Initiatives such as “U Care, U Share” provide disaster relief and promote sustainability, including tree-planting programs. The foundations’ projects, like “Sagip Saka,” empower Filipino farmers by connecting them to markets.

They also partnered with several organizations and companies (Hands On Manila, Trans-Asia Shipping Lines, and WorkLink Services Inc.) for Hands On Siargao to provide books and school supplies to students in Del Carmen, Siargao. Their partnership with Operation Smile also brought aid to typhoon-stricken communities in Cebu following Typhoon Odette.

Sports advocacy is another hallmark of Dennis’ impact. As owner of the Phoenix Fuel Masters in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and a former Presidential Adviser on Sports, he continues to support local athletes and promotes the country’s sports programs.

Outside the Boardroom

Uy is married to Cherylyn Chiong, who graduated from Ateneo de Davao University and plays an active role in Udenna’s operations. They have three children: Chelsea Denise, Charlize Donatela, and Charles Dennison “Chuck.”

His hobbies include working out in the gym, traveling with his family, and playing basketball or golf. A self-proclaimed admirer of disruptors like Steve Jobs, Uy’s reading list often includes business books.

His contributions have not gone unnoticed as he has earned numerous accolades, including the ASEAN Business Awards’ Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2017 and the Agora Award for Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship in 2013. In addition, Uy also serves as an Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan in the Philippines, a role he has held since 2011.
