In His Youth

Much has been said about Robert Coyiuto Sr.–how he fled Fujian, China, after World War II to settle in the Philippines and ultimately became a trailblazer in the insurance industry when he founded Prudential Guarantee and Assurance Inc. (PGAI). Also, it’s worth noting that the elder Coyiuto was the first Filipino underwriter to join Lloyd’s of London. It's this excellence that Coyiuto Jr. saw growing up and in business, much like most industries and disciplines; having firsthand experience beats any lesson in the classroom.

With this background, the young Robert learned the intricacies of the insurance industry and what it takes to thrive in the business. He pursued his education at San Beda College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Commerce (BSC), which further laid the foundation for his future ventures. By the time he assumed leadership of PGAI at 29 years old, following his father’s untimely passing, he already possessed the knowledge and experience needed to grow the company into one of the largest non-life insurance providers in the country.

Robert Coyiuto Jr.'s Business Empire

Robert Coyiuto Jr. took over the one-year-old PGAI and built an empire that spans insurance, energy, automotive, and more. At the helm of Prudential, he expanded its operations to include 37 offices across the Philippines, serving over 630,000 clients and managing gross premiums exceeding P9.64 billion. By partnering with European giants through a robust network of brokers, the company also forayed into the international reinsurance market.

One of Robert Jr.’s most significant positions is his role as co-vice chairman of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), which operates and develops the country’s power transmission network. Under his leadership, alongside Henry “Big Boy” Sy Jr., the NGCP is currently embarking on a five-year P160-billion capital expenditure (CAPEX) program to modernize the grid with smart technologies and ensure reliable power delivery nationwide. It started in 2021 and is set to end in 2025.

This ambitious program, which aims to “create a world-class transmission network,” affects substations and transmission lines in Pasay City; Navotas City; Marilao, Bulacan; New Antipolo, Rizal; Taguig City, Taytay, Rizal; and Silang, Cavite.

Beyond insurance and energy, Robert Jr.’s passion for luxury cars culminated in the founding of PGA Cars in 1996. PGA Cars introduced and became the exclusive distributor of prestigious automotive brands like Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Bentley in the Philippines. Currently, Robert Jr. is PGA Cars’ Chairman, while his son, Roberto III, leads as the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Impact on Philippine Society and Economy

Through Prudential Guarantee, Robert Jr.’s contributions to the Philippine economy cannot be understated. PGAI has provided comprehensive non-life insurance solutions to top corporations, ensuring stability and growth across sectors. The company’s joint venture with Japan’s Sompo Insurance, which they entered into in 1991, further underscores its role in fostering international partnerships.

As co-vice chairman of NGCP, Robert Jr. has played a pivotal role in modernizing the country’s power grid. Ongoing projects like the Mindoro Island-Luzon interconnection aim to improve energy access and bolster economic growth in underserved areas. NGCP’s smart grid initiatives are setting new benchmarks for efficiency and reliability in energy transmission.

Philanthropy is another cornerstone of the younger Coyiuto’s legacy. With NGCP, he established initiatives, including the TECHKID Computer Laboratory Project, which has equipped schools across the country with modern technology since 2017. Through the Coyiuto Foundation, his support for education extends to the Robert Coyiuto Jr. Center for Integrated Technologies in Batangas, at the Fritz Pierre Tritz Institute-ERDA Tech Campus, where he donated P60 million. Cultural preservation is another initiative of the Coyiuto Foundation, as it holds biennial awards celebrating authors of biographies and autobiographies.

In 2019, Robert Jr. was knighted and awarded the Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia for his efforts in connecting the Philippines and Italy. The statement of the Embassy of Italy in Manila said, “His ties to Italy go beyond the distribution of Italian brands in the automotive sector since Coyiuto has been collaborating for years with the embassy, actively supporting its activities of cultural promotion, driven by a sincere attachment to our country, of which he has become one of the main sponsors in the Philippines.”

Outside the Boardroom

While Robert Jr. is known for his sharp business mind, he is equally celebrated for his personal passions. An avid car enthusiast, he shares his love for automobiles with his sons–a shared passion that has not only kept PGA Cars thriving but has also fostered strong familial bonds.

His appreciation for fine dining and culture is also evident in his collaboration with Chef Antonio “Tony Boy” Escalante to bring Antonio’s, a renowned restaurant in Tagaytay, to PGA Cars Studio in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

Robert Jr. is married to Rosie T. Coyiuto, and they have four children: Roberto III, Benedicto, Prudencio, and Maria Rosalina. The family remains central to his life as his sons are actively involved in the car distribution business, while his other children contribute to their stock brokerage and insurance enterprises. Despite his demanding schedule, he finds time to travel with his family for both work and leisure.

As noted by Philippine Daily Inquirer writer Botchi Santos in his article “Family Values,” Robert Jr.’s family dynamic stands out: "I have had the pleasure of traveling with the Coyiuto family for a mixed work/holiday trip to Shanghai and bumped into them also in Hong Kong and Singapore, and the extended family atmosphere around them is always very refreshing in an industry that can be very stiff and formal when meeting with the top bosses. Coyiuto Jr. can be tough and gruff, but hides a very warm and caring side of his to those whom he holds dear."
