Beyond the Spotlight: Jaclyn Jose's Most Challenging Role as a Mother

Critically acclaimed actress Jaclyn Jose (born Mary Jane Guck) has left a significant mark on Philippine cinema with the numerous notable roles she has portrayed since the '80s—from Lino Brocka's White Slavery, Chito Rono's Private Show, Joel Lamangan's Flor Contemplacion Story to Victor Villanueva's Patay na si Hesus, Brillante Mendoza's Ma'Rosa, and the TV series FPJ's Batang Quiapo. The local entertainment industry mourns her recent passing.

Despite the myriad of characters she has played on screen, Jose admitted that navigating motherhood in real life was among her most challenging roles. Balancing her career while nurturing and guiding her children, Andi Eigenman and Gwen Guck, showcased a different facet of her strength and character, mirroring the depth and versatility she brought to her professional work.

In an interview with Ogie Diaz, Jose shares that she had to single-handedly raise her two children with actor Mark Gil and musician Kenneth Ilagan after their separation.

Unlike other parents who closely monitor and involve themselves in nearly all aspects of their children's lives, Jose adopted a parenting approach that emphasized independence and personal growth for her children. "...ayokong pigilan ang mga anak ko sa gusto nilang gawin. Kung ano man yung gusto nilang tahakin, gusto ko silang hayaan. I want them to enjoy life, kasi life is short. Na-realize natin yan lalo na nitong pandemic," she said. 

True to her word, when her son made the decision to pursue his studies in the United States and her daughter chose to settle in Siargao, Jose supported them wholly. She gave them her blessings, even if it meant facing the prospect of living alone.

"[Noong nagdesisyon si Andi na manirahan sa Siargao] hindi ako nagdalawang-isip, kasi alam ko na hindi ko siya mapipigilan. Si Andi ay buo mag-desisyon. Hindi ko siya pinakakialaman kahit sa career niya. Never ako naging stage mother," she told Ogie. 

When Eigenmann opted to step away from the glamour of show business, Jose understood it was a choice made for the well-being of her children. "Siguro sabi niya, ayokong mangyari sa akin yung nangyari sa nanay ko, na hindi ako nakitang lumaki," she reflected. 

Jose respects Eigenmann's choice to prioritize family first. "Kasi ako, pag pinapili ako kung anak o career, career [ang pipiliin ko]," she told Diaz. "[Ang pananaw ko kasi], paano ko palalakihin ang anak ko kung wala akong ipakakain? Pero hindi ibig sabihin na pinili ko ang career ko dahil mas mahal ko yung career ko kaysa sa anak ko. Mas mahal ko yung anak ko. At kung hindi ko pipiliin yung career, hindi siya lalaki sa mahusay na environment o school." 

Jose finds her daughter's acts of selflessness deeply admirable. "Well, for one, yung pagre-resign para sa mga anak, hindi ko kayang gawin yun. Doon ako bilib na bilib sa kanya. Yung kinalimutan niya ang sarili. Yung lifestyle. Medyo sosyal yan e. Tapos palagi niya sinasabi sa mga posts niya na children are the most important thing. Mahal na mahal niya ang tatlong anak niya," she says. 

Reflecting on the profound relationship between parents and their children, and the intricacies of upbringing in today’s changing world, she stressed the importance of instilling values in children and giving them the trust they need.

She readily seeks forgiveness if she believes she has wronged them. "Patawarin mo ako, anak. Hindi ko na uulitin. Ganoon ako. Ayaw kong magalit sila sa akin," she shared.

"Maaaring tayo ang nagluwal sa kanila at nagbigay ng buhay. Pero huwag natin kalimutan na may buhay din sila at may karapatan na ipaglaban kung ano ang sa tingin nila ay tama. Makinig din tayo sa kanila at hindi porke nanay tayo at anak sila, lagi na tayong tama," she said. 

"...alam ko kung paano ko sila pinalaki. May respeto, may pagmamahal, marunong makisama sa kapwa, magalang... Pag duda ka sa pagpapalaki mo, ikaw na may problema. Kung alam mo na pinalaki mo nang tama, magtiwala ka," she said. 

"Ang panalangin ko ay huwag sanang magkasakit ang mga anak ko at maging maligaya sila. Mabuhay ng normal, mabuhay ng tama," she said. 

Jose died on Saturday, March 2, her talent agency PPL Entertainment Inc. announced early Monday morning. She was 60.
