After 10 films, $50 million in earnings, and an absolute masterpiece of a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) swan song in Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr. is back from a quick break from the franchise he built. This time, Iron Man will be wearing a newer, more villainous mask. Meet your new Doctor Doom.

After his official (re)introduction at San Diego’s Comic-Con, Downey would be revealed on stage by none other than MCU President Kevin Feige. During the event, it was also shared that the Russo Brothers would be coming back to do more Avengers sequels, Secret Wars and Doomsday. It was here that the public met Doom for the first time.

"I like playing complicated characters," Downey told the press.

Fans have been entertaining the possibility of Downey returning to the MCU for a while now. Since leaving the franchise though, the 59-year-old actor has had pretty steady work, to say the least. His return to non-superhero roles was punctuated by his most recent feat: receiving an Academy Award for his role as the antagonistic bureaucrat Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.

Comic book fans had been following the casting for Doom over the past year, after Jonathan Majors' Kang went, well, a little off the script. Since his charges, Marvel has been searching for new ways to resurrect the MCU. Fans, nevertheless, were caught off guard by the news.

Doctor Doom is perhaps one of the most recognizable villains in Marvel. Although he's thought of more as a foe to the Fantastic Four, he is quite the complex antagonist and would be an essential part of the redone storyline when RDJ plays him in 2026. Doom blends together the power of magic and science, and the possibilities with him on the big screen are endless.

But yes, we can all feel weird about this. We're allowed, too. And judging by the internet's funniest reactions, MCU fans are still processing Downey's big comeback.
