Royal Mint Honors George Michael with Collectible Coin in 'Music Legends' Series

The Royal Mint has announced the launch of a commemorative coin celebrating the legacy of the late British pop icon George Michael. This tribute positions the iconic singer among the ranks of other celebrated artists in the Royal Mint’s prestigious "Music Legends" series, which includes legends such as David Bowie, Elton John, and Queen.

Michael's solo career took off in 1987 with the release of his debut album "Faith." The album was a massive success, featuring several hits like "Faith," "Father Figure," "One More Try," and "I Want Your Sex." "Faith" not only showcased his talents as a singer and songwriter but also his skills as a producer.

His subsequent albums, including "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1" (1990), "Older" (1996), and "Patience" (2004), continued to earn critical and commercial success. These works revealed a more introspective and mature artist, often reflecting on themes of love, loss, and fame.

Over the course of his career, Michael's global record sales surpassed 100 million, establishing him as one of the all-time top-selling musicians. He won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards from eight nominations.

Crafted by artist and sculptor Sandra Deiana, the commemorative coin captures Michael in one of his most memorable and defining moments—the "Faith" era. It features a striking headshot of the iconic artist, complete with his signature sunglasses, alongside an engraving of the famous refrain from "Faith." The coin incorporates the colors black and red, a homage to the palette predominately featured throughout his illustrious career.

Deiana said research has been a crucial element in her creative process. "I examined photographs, interviews and archival materials relating to George Michael," she shared. "I tried to capture his expression, his personality and the iconic image of him in my design. Every detail had to accurately reflect his style and his person.”

In a statement, George Michael Entertainment said that Michael would have been "enormously proud and genuinely touched" by the acknowledgment from a revered national institution.
The coin is available in a selection of limited-edition finishes—including precious metal proof, Brilliant Uncirculated, and vibrant color versions.
