The Metropolitan Museum of Manila (MET) has been under criticism over the past week after a series of posts made by Bonifacio Global City's social media accounts about the upcoming Banksy exhibit, Banksy Universe | Manila 2024.

In a statement, the M makes the distinction clear: while the exhibit hasn't been authorized, it nevertheless is a collaboration together with the Banksy Universe group. The museum makes it known that this remains a good opportunity to reintroduce Banksy to Filipino audiences.

The art collective specializes in exhibits for such, cooperating with various galleries and museums worldwide. It's well-publicized that Banksy, the enigmatic artist, is not affiliated with any actual gallery, museum, or group.

“While Banksy Universe | Manila 2024, like many such exhibitions in museums around the world, is not authorized or endorsed by Banksy, it will feature a significant number of works that trace the trajectory of Banksy’s career, affording visitors a closer look into the themes that preoccupy him, as well as the transformative power of art," the M said in a release.

The institution added: “It’s almost impossible to see Banksy’s original art outside of the specific locations in which they were created. Banksy Universe | Manila 2024 is a unique opportunity to learn more about Banksy’s art and explore the universality of the many piercing social, political, and domestic issues it raises.”

BGC had promoted the exhibition with a caption that said "Art is not a crime," to which commenters responded by explaining the contradictory ideas in the Banksy exhibit, Banksy Universe | Manila 2024.

The street artist is, of course, best known for his critique of capitalism, war, and even the gallery system. Banksy constantly explores social, ethical, domestic, and even political themes in his works.

More details are expected to come in the following weeks leading up to the now-controversial showcase.
