This Exhibit Spotlights Louis Poulsen's Most Iconic Designs

It was the great mid-century modern architect Frank Lloyd Wright who once said that light is the beautifier of buildings. Any great design scheme, after all, takes into account space, and any great space knows how to manipulate lighting.

Whether it's natural light or the integration of lamps, pendants, or luminaries, light choices define the architectural makeup of a room. Lighting can enhance and elevate a space. It can manufacture moods, and sharpen or soften certain features, objects, textures, and materials. Simply put, lighting illuminates the character of a space and reflects the personality of the owner, in both a figurative and literal sense.

Filipino photographer Colin Dancel was asked to "capture and delve into the essence of light" for the He(art) of Light exhibit.

Danish lighting design company Louis Poulsen makes the case for curated lighting that mirrors the "natural rhythm of light." Form always follows function with the brand. Since 1874, the manufacturer has been at the forefront of lighting innovation in living spaces across the world. Collaborations with the likes of Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen, for instance, have allowed Louis Poulsen's wide-ranging portfolio to flourish amidst evolving design trends and more.

This year will be the 150th year of the brand's existence. Celebrating such a milestone, Louis Poulsen decided to host the He(art) of Light exhibit here in the Philippines.

Looking Back at Louis Poulsen's Most Memorable Designs

Recently, Louis Poulsen even debuted a collection in collaboration with FENDI Casa.

For its 150th anniversary, Louis Poulsen wanted to rerelease some of its most important designs. This time, the brand wanted to debut its unique color collection. Noticeable here is the fact that the shades are in matte white, with a radiating pink glow coming from within. These are only accentuated by the metallised brass.

AJ Lamps

One of Denmark's leading architects and designers, Arne Jacobsen would be credited for this lamp's minimalist design. Boasting a tiltable shade that makes it fitting for reading at night, this lamp was originally designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.

Verner Panton's Panthella Series

Verner Panton was renowned for his inventive, novel concepts for furnishing and lighting.

In 1971, the Penthella series would be heralded for its playful approach to light, authoring a softer glow and more organic forms. These lamps' shade and base are meant to serve as reflectors. This follows in Louis Poulsen's design functionalism.

PH 5 Series

Danish author and designer Poul Henningsen was one of the most influential lighting artists of the 20th century. He began collaborating with the brand in 1924 and never looked back. Of course, he'd gone on to produce some memorable lamps during his most productive years. Among them is the PH 5 series, which applied the designer's three-shade system to produce ambient lighting that was glare-free.

PH Artichoke

This is perhaps Louis Poulsen's most groundbreaking design. First introduced by Henningsen in 1958 for Copenhagen’s Langelinie Pavilion, this lamp is best remembered for its 72 hand-placed metal leaves, a celebration of modern elegance and harmony. For its reissue, the PH Artichoke is only available in 300 pieces.

The Artichoke lamp is an icon for a reason, after all.

Also part of the celebration is the brand's collaboration with Filipino photographer Colin Dancel, who was asked to "capture and delve into the essence of light." Dancel's photographs are emotive, dissecting the interplay between light and movement. Viewers are invited to experience light both as a form of illumination and as a living, breathing entity that shapes each of our perspectives.
