World Chocolate Day is celebrated on the seventh of July around the globe. It’s believed to be the day chocolate was first introduced in Europe by Christopher Columbus after a trip from the New World in the 15th century.

Chocolate appears to have been grown as early as 5,000 years ago in the Amazon rainforests. The Aztecs made Xocolatl from cacao seeds, and believed the plants were bestowed by the God of wisdom.

From the Spanish who began drinking sweetened chocolate to the British confectioners who added cocoa butter and sugar, chocolate evolved into the candy bars children around the world have loved for generations.

Today, people all over the world consume over three million tons of cocoa beans a year, according the World Cocoa Foundation. Côte d’Ivoire in Africa is the largest producer by volume, producing 33% of global supply, since the ideal climate for growing cocoa is hot, rainy, and tropical, with vegetation providing shade for the trees.

It's not all about desserts and sweet treats either.
