Kabosu’s life began under less-than-ideal circumstances. She was a rescue dog, saved from a grim fate and adopted by Atsuko Sato, a kind-hearted kindergarten teacher.
In 2010, two years after welcoming Kabosu into her home, Sato posted a photo on her blog that would change the course of her life. It showed Kabosu with her paws neatly crossed and an expression so beguiling that it quickly captured the hearts of netizens across the world.
The image’s unique charm didn’t go unnoticed. It rapidly evolved into the "Doge" meme, characterized by goofy, broken-English captions revealing the inner thoughts of dogs. It was cute, fun, and very entertaining. Kabosu’s face became synonymous with humor and whimsy. The meme’s popularity eventually led to its use as the logo for Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that started as a joke but grew to have a market cap of $23 billion, with high-profile supporters like Elon Musk.
For Sato, discovering Kabosu’s celebrity status was surreal. She never thought the dog would become so famous in such a short amount of time. She fondly recalls a dear friend alerting her to the meme, and her initial reaction to the now-famous photo was simply, "She's pulling a weird face."
Over time, Sato came to appreciate the joy and laughter Kabosu brought to millions of netizens around the world. Despite her growing fame, Kabosu remained a beloved companion to Sato, accompanying her to the kindergarten where she worked and resting on a big cushion at home, surrounded by several fan-made Doge tributes.
Kabosu’s influence extended far beyond just being a meme; it evolved to inspire people in other ways as well. In 2021, Sato sold the viral photo as a non-fungible token (NFT) for $4.2 million, marking it as one of the most expensive photos ever sold. The proceeds went to various charitable causes, including a significant donation to Save the Children, demonstrating the profound impact of Kabosu’s fame.
Even in her later years, when her health was no longer pristine, Kabosu continued to touch lives. Despite falling ill with leukemia and liver disease at the end of 2022, the global community rallied around her. There was an outpouring of love and appreciation, with so many sending prayers and well-wishes, that Sato believes contributed to her recovery. Kabosu’s legacy of spreading joy and fostering community spirit remained strong until the end. One thing is for sure: when Kabosu needed some love back, those who adored her did not disappoint.
In November of 2023, a $100,000 statue of Kabosu was unveiled. Located in Sakura City’s Sakura Furusato Hiroba riverside park, the monument features a statue of Kabosu perched on a polished stone sofa, her paws crossed in front of her just like in the Doge picture. This tribute stands as a testament to the enduring love and admiration for Kabosu, the Shiba Inu who became an internet phenomenon.
Sato, along with "Own The Doge"—a community-driven project and NFT (non-fungible token) initiative that revolves around the Doge meme featuring Kabosu—has continued to leverage this fame for good, donating large sums to international charities and fostering connections with fans worldwide.
As Kabosu peacefully passed away at the age of 18 on May 24, Sato reflected on the incredible journey they had shared together. Kabosu’s story is not just about a dog who became a meme, but a celebration of the unexpected ways in which love, humor, and kindness can spread across the world.
