At This Japan Home Centre Branch, Onions Will Be Accepted as Payment
Not enough onion jokes can save us from the fact that we are living through some very, very weird times. Seeing these onion prices alone is enough to make a grown man cry (damnit, we did it again). The Philippines’ Japan Home Centre (JHC) has taken things to a new level, after announcing that one of its branches will be accepting those ever-elusive onions as payment for select in-store items. Onions, in 2023, after all, are currency.
In a Facebook post, the JHC said that customers who visit its store at 84 Panay Avenue in Quezon City on Saturday, February 4, can exchange onions for goods, with a limit of three-item purchases. The onions that will be collected from the promo will be donated to the company's community pantry efforts.

The company hasn't released any details about the kind of onions customers should bring, but we're guessing this means that any onion is valid.
Onions have been a sore spot for Filipinos over the past few months. In December, the Department of Agriculture said that Metro Manila markets have started pricing red onions from P500 to P720 per kilo, based on its monitoring reports at the time. White onions, on the other hand, started going for P500 per kilo.
These prices are roughly 600 percent higher than the global average, based on the Global Product Prices database. The government has blamed smugglers and the "off season" for farmers as some of the main drivers of the deficit.
