The Philippines Has the Fourth Most Hotels with Bidets in the World, According to Study

The bidet was invented in France in the 18th century, but it’s a relatively new phenomenon in the Philippines. While Filipinos generally have good toilet habits, not a lot of homes in the country are fitted with bidets, with many still using the good old tabo and pour-flush system. 

It’s apparently a different story with hotels and rentals. According to a wide-ranging study that sought to find out people’s bathroom hygiene culture, more and more holiday accommodations in the Philippines offer bidets to their guests.

In the study that analyzed thousands of listings on hotel booking platform Booking.com, the Philippines ranked fourth in the world in the number of hotels and rentals with bidets, with 52.91 percent. Only ahead in the ranking are Jordan with 52.96 percent (third), Argentina at 61.24 percent (second), and, at number one, Italy, with 76.28 percent of its hotels and accommodations on the platform reporting that they have bidets.

In fact, nine out of 10 cities with the most bidets in the world are in Italy.

Interestingly, in the land of the bidet’s birth—France—only 1.86 percent of rentals currently have bidets. The study says most bathrooms are instead fitted with bathtubs and washing machines.

At the other end of the spectrum, of all the countries included in the study, Denmark was found to be at the bottom of the list, with only 0.11 percent of hotels and accommodations reporting to have bidets.

Meanwhile, 70.42 percent of rentals in the Philippines reported to have showers, while only 17.88 percent have bathtubs.

Surprisingly, Cambodia tops the list of countries with hotels equipped with the most showers, with 89.57 percent of hotels and accommodations having showers, followed by Netherlands (87.41 percent), Sweden (86.59 percent), and Austria (85.6 percent). This makes sense as the shower is largely a Western invention, so many hotels in the continent are likely to have a shower.

The country with the least number of hotel rooms with a shower is Nigeria, with only 30.15 percent).

Meanwhile, the title of country with the most number of baths is Japan (66.2 percent), followed by Canada (58 percent) and the U.S. (48.20 percent). Taking the title of country with the least number of baths is Finland, at only 3.57 percent.
