Porsche Design Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary at MIAS 2022

A classic lifestyle brand turns half a century young.

Porsche AG is celebrating the 50th founding anniversary of the Porsche Design lifestyle brand and studio this year. It is a brand and company founded by the grandson and namesake of Ferdinand Porsche, Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche, who designed one of the most iconic sports cars of all time, the original Porsche 911.

Porsche produced 750 units of the very exclusive Porsche 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design based on a Targa 4 GTS and meticulously restored a historical 911 S 2.4 Targa, commemorating Porsche Design’s 1972 founding year. The 50-year-old classic has been faithfully restored by Porsche Classic. Both cars were finished in black exterior and interior colorways, because it was the preferred color of F.A. Porsche. These two cars will be on display at the Porsche Museum in Germany until July to celebrate Porsche Design’s 50 Years of engineering luxury.

In the Philippines, Porsche Design Manila celebrated Porsche Design 50Y by participating at the 2022 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) with a prominent display at the entrance lobby of the World Trade Center. The last MIAS in 2019 and Worldbex Services International, the organizers of the event, decided to cancel its 2020 event due to the imminent lockdown because of the pandemic.

Porsche Design Manila recreated a tribute display with a gorgeous and well-restored green colored 1972 Porsche Targa together with some Porsche Design merchandise and lifestyle products.

“When you rethink the function of something, the form sometimes emerges as if by itself,” F.A. Porsche said about what still drives the engineers and designers at Porsche Design today. In 1972, he founded Porsche Design with his brother Hans-Peter. The designer of the Porsche 911 imagined a company that would carry the principles and spirit of Porsche beyond the boundaries of the automobile. Porsche Design has long since become an internationally renowned premium lifestyle brand, known for functional and durable products with a purist aesthetic. The Porsche Design lifestyle brand creates inspiring high-quality products, including watches, sunglasses, luggage and leather goods.

"We are excited to be part of the highlights once again for MIAS 2022, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Porsche Design, established by F.A. "Butzi" Porsche who also designed the iconic Porsche 911,” said Hans Clifford Yao, managing director of Porsche Design Manila. “We will have a classic 1971 Porsche 911 Targa at the lobby of the World Trade Center as part of our curated showcase together with Porsche Design apparel, accessories, luggage and footwear collections."

The classic show car also entered into the MIAS-Petron Custom and Classic Car Competition, an annual show car competition held in conjunction with the MIAS with some 50 well-crafted and restored vehicles vying for top honors including the prestigious “Best of Show” award. The beautifully restored 911 Porsche Targa won one of this year’s major awards in the “Best 2-Door,” category as well as the runner-up award in “Best in Paint” category. MIAS is considered the “biggest motoring event” in the country, with some 120,000 visitors who braved the long weekend traffic and long queues.

The car was carefully restored by its owner Manny Dimaculangan, who loaned his car for the event. His efforts were recognized by the show's judges; it ended up bagging two well-deserved awards at MIAS.
