Behind-the-Scenes of Avatar: The Way of Water
Esquire contributor Hugo Zacarias Yonzon IV put it best: “James Cameron not only employs cutting edge filmmaking technology, he pioneers them.”
Avatar: The Way of Water is a three-hour spectacle that takes a quantum leap forward in film technology. Film was never the same after Avatar challenged the industry in 2009, and we predict the same effect will happen after The Way of Water. A notorious perfectionist, Cameron waited eight years for the technology to film performance capture underwater catch up, then another three years to finish filming. But it was the wait, and The Way of Water is now the first film to ever pull of underwater performance capture.
Avatar: The Way of Water is another milestone in film history, and we can’t wait for a full behind-the-scenes documentary on how they did it. Until then, here’s a series of BTS shots during the filming of Avatar: The Way of Water.
