'It's a New Era in the DC Universe,' Says Black Adam Actor Dwayne Johnson

The DC Extended Universe has found a new champion in The Rock himself. Dwayne Johnson’s new film and passion project Black Adam is now in cinemas, and what we thought was just another actor in the DCEU might just become the franchise’s most important ally in the years to come. 

With Warner Bros Discovery going through a whole revamp, fans have been unsure about the future of the DCEU, especially with the cancelation of the streaming movie Batgirl. But Johnson isn’t worried. In fact, the star of DC’s biggest superhero movie of the year is even more hopeful of what’s to come in the DCEU. 

“It’s a unique time in the superhero genre, where there’s the introduction of fresh blood and new characters on both sides of the aisle—at Marvel and certainly at DC,” said Johnson to the New York Times. “And the launching of Black Adam is converging with a time where they are also bringing in new leadership at Warner Bros. and new leadership on the DC side is soon to be coming in. I feel very confident about the direction of the DC universe.” 

“It is going to require real strategy and real leadership. And that requires us not to look at Marvel’s success and say, let’s follow that blueprint. That’s Marvel. I’m very happy for them. We don’t want to be Marvel, in my opinion. We want to be DC and we want to do it our way.”

There's no denying The Rock's love for Black Adam. Since it was first announced that he'd be playing the antihero, Johnson has never budged in his loyalty to this fictional character. 

The DCEU has appeared leaderless for years, both behind the scenes and on screen. Ezra Miller is embroiled in drama, Zack Snyder has long abandoned the ship, and most of the actors are getting more attention for outside projects. Yet here we have Dwayne Johnson stepping up and becoming the unexpected face of this new era for the DCEU. 

“I have been saying for some time, there’s a new era in the DC Universe that’s about to begin,” Johnson said. “What I really meant by, ‘This is a new era in the DC Universe,’ is listening to the fans. And doing our best to give the fans what they want.”

We don’t need to go into detail about DC fans’ complicated relationship with DC movies. It’s a love-hate situationship at the moment, but if Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zazlav is to be believed, the DC Extended Universe is going to be getting their undivided attention for the next 10 years. 

It’s a new era, indeed.
