The last time an Australian took on the role of James Bond, things didn’t turn out so well. Model-turned-actor George Lazenby quit the franchise after just one film immediately grew a pair of mutton chops and publicly sniped at the ‘brutish’ Bond franchise.

But that was 50 years ago, and Avengers star Chris Hemsworth thinks it’s about time that another Aussie tried on the blood-splattered tuxedo – specifically, Australian man Chris Hemsworth.

Talking to Balance Magazine, the Thor actor revealed that he’s interested in taking over from Daniel Craig after Bond 25 and even considers one of his previous films a veritable audition tape.

“When we were shooting Rush someone had (mentioned Bond) and I thought, ‘Cool, if this is my audition tape, then great,' " he said. "I don’t think you’ll ever meet anyone who doesn’t want to have a crack at James Bond. I’d love to do it.

“But that’s up to so many elements and is way beyond myself; it’s not one you can pitch yourself on to either"

Of course, most actors would give the same answer – but it certainly sounds like Hemsworth has given it some considerable thought. He went on to say:

"It’s something that the community of Bond fans, Barbara Broccoli and the whole crew there agree on, and it has to be a very organic decision from them. There have been a lot of names thrown out there and a lot of brilliant people can tackle that one.”

The Australian actor, 35, is a newcomer in the race for Bond. Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy had his odds slashed this week, but Hemsworth’s Avengers co-star Tom Hiddleston still leads the pack at 3/1. Luckily for Chris, there's a long time to go.
