Westeros Has More Than 100 Kingdoms In Game of Thrones Prequels, Says George RR Martin

That's a lot of kingdoms.

We've had precious little to go on regarding the Game of Thrones prequel spin-off. Sure, the cast list's out there and we know it'll dig into the Stark family mythos, but until now the main discussion has been about whether the Targaryens will be there in full effect with their dragons.

George RR Martin's given us a few more tidbits though - chief among which is that it sounds like Westeros is going to be a pretty hectic place, with more than 100 different kingdoms scrapping over territory and prestige rather than the big seven shown in the main series.

"We talk about the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros; there were Seven Kingdoms at the time of Aegon’s Conquest," Martin told Entertainment Weekly. "But if you go back further then there are nine kingdoms, and 12 kingdoms, and eventually you get back to where there are a hundred kingdoms - petty kingdoms - and that’s the era we’re talking about here."

Intriguing. But who'll be there scrapping, George?

"The Starks will definitely be there," he said. So that'll be nice, getting the old family albums out to see what Jon Snow, Sansa, Arya and the gang's forebears were like - even if Kit Harington's already ruled out a cameo of any kind. Anyone else?

"Obviously the White Walkers are here - or as they’re called in my books, The Others - and that will be an aspect of it. There are things like direwolves and mammoths."

What of the Lannisters though, George? What of them?

"The Lannisters aren’t there yet, but Casterly Rock is certainly there; it’s like the Rock of Gibraltar," he says. "It’s actually occupied by the Casterlys - for whom it’s still named after in the time of Game of Thrones."

So still no word on the Targaryens or their dragons, but it's good to have confirmation that a major geological feature didn't suddenly spring out of the ocean one day.
