House of the Dragon's Matt Smith and Paddy Considine Talk Complicated Targaryen Sibling Relationship
House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith and Paddy Considine have opened up about the complicated sibling relationship between their characters on the show.
Smith and Considine, who play Daemon and Viserys Targaryen respectively on the Game of Thrones prequel, sat down with Digital Spy to talk about the brothers' dynamic with each other.
In one scene in House of the Dragon, Viserys confronts Daemon about the fact that he is celebrating his son's death. Talking about that scene, Matt said: "I think with Daemon, there's just a very deep, deep love for his brother.
"I think there's a strange fragility to him. It's all about acceptance and he's cross. He's annoyed at his older brother for ruling like this, and not accepting him. So I think they're all genuine concerns. I don't think it's particularly histrionic for him."
"I think Viserys is torn between being a brother and being king," Paddy said. "But I think that, you know, if it was anyone else who had uttered those words, they'd be dead.
"But I think with Viserys, again, it's the guilt he feels for making the choices he makes in the first episode and I think sometimes Viserys perceives Daemon as someone who abuses his position quite a bit – abuses his privilege a little bit at times.
"Whereas Viserys doesn't have that sort of gene in him, really. He doesn't abuse his position as king in any way and I think, sometimes, Viserys feels that Daemon gets away with things because he is the prince," he added.
They also spoke about their past and what the brothers used to be like before they had all these big responsibilities.
"Daemon's like: 'Why can't you just get away with things with me?'," Matt said. "Because there was a time when they used to go out together. They were more equal, weren't they? Not equal, but…"
"Go out clubbing," Paddy interjects. "But I think it's that, at one point, the relationship was very, very different between them. But now he's king. He has duties. And he's always defending Daemon in the council chamber.”
"They want him gone, and I'm always defending him, and trying to find excuses, and give him other jobs."
