Love Survives as Mula sa Buwan Returns to the Post-Pandemic Stage

The hit Filipino musical Mula sa Buwan returned to the stage Friday as one of the first musicals to jumpstart Philippine theater since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Four years since it was last staged live, the sarzuela-like production created by director-playwright Pat Valera and singer-songwriter William Elvin Manzano in 2010 is back with a 13-show limited run from Aug. 26 to Sept. 11. 

This time, with award-winning actor Myke Salomon taking over the lead role of of Cyrano alongside actress Gab Pangilinan reprising her role as Roxane, and actor-singer Markki Stroem assuming the role of Christian.

"Although it retains the plot of unrequited love, question of beauty and the relentless battle against compromise, the beloved story has been reimagined to tell a more familiar story: OURS," the play's description of itself reads, describing how it drew from Edmond Rostand's 1897 play, Cyrano de Bergerac.

Set in wartime Manila of the 1940s, "Mula sa Buwan" brings together a young ensemble of local talent in telling its interpretation of how love endures the hardest of times, a fact of life that resonates even more in the wake of a crisis like COVID-19, which has upended life as we know it.

Brought by Barefoot Theatre Collaborative (formerly Black Box Productions), Mula sa Buwan has ten more shows set at Samsung Performing Arts Theatre in Circuit Makati.
