Maid in Malacañang earned the ire of human rights group, historians, and more upon its release. The family drama is a fictionalized retelling of the Marcos family's last three days in Malacañang Palace, leading to their exile in Hawaii after the People Power Revolution in 1986. It was criticized for its supposed "malicious" portrayal of the Aquino family and the protesters during the uprising.

Yap had already been writing the screenplay to the Maid in Malacañang sequel in October. Critics expect the next film to address the Marcos' alleged involvement in the murder of Aquino.

In the past, Yap has said that he's been considering Philip Salvador and Joey Marquez for roles like Marcos' Armed Forces of the Philippines Commanding Officer Fabian Ver.
