How the John Wick Spin-Off Honors Lance Reddick's Memory
Lance Reddick might have not been the face of the John Wick franchise, but you could argue that he was the heart. And in honor of the actor’s legacy, the John Wick prequel is doing justice to his character, Charon’s, origin story through The Continental, the upcoming prequel series that follows Winston and Charon’s history.

For John Wick franchise executive producer Basil Iwanyk, Charon’s importance to the prequel show is a testament to the impact Lance Reddick left behind when he unexpectedly passed away in March 2023. In an interview with Esquire Philippines, Iwanyk shared how through The Continental, the creative team of John Wick felt Reddick’s absence—and legacy—keenly.
“We watched all the [movies recently]. It was the first time ever we watched them after Lance passed away. And I was like, this is amazing. He went from a character that was number nine on the call sheet to whatever it was [in the fourth film],” said Iwanyk.
As Iwanyk tells it, Charon’s character was originally written in just a few scenes in the first film, but Reddick’s delivery was so powerful that Charon became an entity of his own, which is a prime example of how actors can make or break characters. And in Reddick’s case, he made him.
“Lance came in and became such a gigantic presence in every scene he was in, in the John Wick films. And there wasn't by design at first. Ultimately, we gave him more to do, especially in John Wick 3,” said Iwanyk. “His nobility is movie star quality. His presence and his loyalty to both the hotel and to Winston had audiences wanting to know more.”
That impact was carried on to the Amazon Prime Video miniseries, where newcomer Ayomide Adegun steps into the shoes of a young Charon in the 1970s New York. On the young Charon in The Continental, Iwanyk said, “He’s almost the heart of the show. And I think that's the ultimate kind of respect that we gave [Reddick for] what he did for the franchise.”
Although Reddick doesn’t appear in The Continental, Charon certainly does. The miniseries will finally dive into Winston and Charon’s origin stories and how they developed a lifelong friendship.
“We honor Charon in going deep into that character as a youth and who he was and where he came from, and start explaining his loyalties to the Continental and to Winston,” explained Iwanyk.
